Energy Efficient Building Design in Ashramshaala

Sustainable Housing Program

Sustainability is a multi-faceted subject that needs to be deliberated upon with depth. Covestro identifies projects where it can add value through a sustainable solution.
One such project is in the area of sustainable architecture, which was implemented in collaboration with Mahila Sewa Housing Trust (MHT). MHT identified the need for a multipurpose space in Gadat Ashramshaala in Vyara, Gujarat. Due to the lack of a dining space at Ashramshaala, students had to have their meals in open, under the trees. This was detrimental to their well-being during summers and monsoons. The proposed solution was a hall where 80 girls could have their meals comfortably.
Covestro shared their expertise and helped build the design and space through our partner Industrial Forams of Greater Noida. Efficiency of space, optimization of functional spaces, thermal comfort, adequate fenestration and efficiency of energy spent were the parameters taken into consideration while creating the design.

The project entailed a thorough research on the various alternative, sustainable building materials and technologies available.  The team zeroed in on cement fibre board with paper honeycomb and Polyurethane infills for both the walls as well as the roofing material. These panels were considered for their energy efficient, speedy installation and lightweight properties. They also have the flexibility in design and enable desirable affordability.
The walls were made up of 100 mm honeycomb panels which ensures a better solution for effective strength, safety and water leakages.
73 mm thick Polyurethane PUF insulated panels were used on the roof, which were further supported by an inner and outer layer of stainless steel sheets.
The Ashramshaala girls feel blessed with this innovative gift from MHT saying they feel cooler in summers inside the space.
Ashramshaala* - It is a residential school which imparts education to children from rural and tribal areas.
