Covestro and PACE unveil affordable housing initiative in Jaipur

Covestro, the world’s leading producer of high-performance polymers, in association with Podar Advisory & Consulting Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. (PACE) inaugurated its affordable housing initiative.

The project is part of the affordable housing initiative of the government. Covestro and PACE have already delivered 8 out of 16 units of energy efficient and affordable homes to the Rajasthan Housing Board. These houses have been made by integrating conventional construction technology with Covestro’s pre-fabricated (polyisocyanurate) PIR panel technology. Covestro has delivered similar projects in various parts of Malaysia as well as in Europe and Australia.

The project is not only aimed at providing low cost houses, the innovative technology also reduces half of the overall cement consumption. The excellent insulation properties of PIR panels make the houses more energy efficient and thus very cost effective. In fact, the insulation value of a PIR-panel is 35-40% better than a mineral wool or polystyrene panel.

Richard Northcote, Chief sustainability Officer, Covestro who was present at the inauguration of this energy efficient and affordable housing project emphasised upon the importance of adopting sustainable practices. He said, “Covestro has set ambitious sustainability targets for 2025; we aim to reduce emissions, invest in sustainable development and contribute to the improvement in the livelihoods of millions of people in underserved markets. With initiatives such as these we aim to galvanize our goals into action.”

A testament to this fact is numerous such initiatives undertaken by Covestro in India which are aimed at creating a brighter and better future for the country. In October, Covestro also announced a collaboration with PACE and Maharashtra Government to build 10 lakh toilets in India by 2022 under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The first pilot for this project was initiated in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, where the consortium partners built public and private toilets and also created awareness of the efficacy of healthy sanitation practices. The toilets which use prefabricated PIR materials from Covestro are designed to be fire-resistant, heat resistant, weatherproof and smell-proof.

Ajay Durrani, Country President, India and Managing Director, Covestro (India), said, “Housing and sanitation are basic necessities of living; and therefore, a key issue that needs to be addressed with urgency. Through such endeavour Covestro is not only providing sustainable solutions for infrastructure, but also reaffirming its commitment towards sustainable development of people, planet and profit to society.”

Despite the country growing in global economic stature, India is home to about 78 million homeless people. According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP), lack of affordable housing is the primary cause of homelessness. To tackle this problem, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation recently sanctioned construction of 82,000 houses for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Such initiatives require the support of private players to get better and large scale results.
The project completed in association with PACE will deliver over 16 units of energy efficient and affordable homes to the Rajasthan Housing Board
