Covestro successfully inspires over 3,000 girl students in India with #STEM4GirlsFestival2018

  • The three month long initiative enabled girl students to interact and participate in STEM workshops
  • Outreach to smaller cities helped girl students experience the opportunities in STEM education

Covestro, the global manufacturer of high-performance polymer materials, successfully concluded #STEM4GirlsFestival2018 with the last leg of the workshop conducted in Nagpur. The third edition of STEM workshops were conducted by Covestro along with Greenlight for Girls, Nehru Science Centre & Chandra Mohan Foundation in 6 cities across India with the aim to inspire more girl students to explore the field of STEM and promote science education in India.

Covestro (India) gave another reason to celebrate during this festive season with #Stem4GirlsFestival2018 which involved participation of over 3000 girl students across India in science experiments and interaction. The valedictory session of the workshop held in Nagpur was preceded by the Chief Guest, Smt. Kanchan Gadkari, well known social worker who shared some inspiring words on women in Indian society. The workshop was held at Raman Science Centre & Planetarium with support from N. Ramdas Iyer, Project Co-ordinator. The 6 city workshop witnessed girls from 109 schools across locations.
On this occasion, Mr. Ajay Durrani, MD, Covestro (India) highlighted how important educating a girl child is, “For India to become a true global power, it is imperative that we provide the right access to quality education and opportunities in formal workforce to our girls. Science and technology plays a very important role and in order to progress and prosper, we need to engage girls in STEM education as it will be biggest provider of jobs and opportunities in next decade. Our society will be truly developed when women are given the right to become active participants and contributors to nation building. While there has been a significant progress on this front, we still have a long way to go. Our country is perfectly poised to reap rich dividends by boosting women’s participation in our workforce. I would like to thank all the partners and volunteers in enabling us to successfully pursue this initiative. Looking at the positive response we are even more committed to take this initiative to the next level.”
The programme focussed on teaching girls in the age group of 11 -15 years with various STEM-based concepts through demonstrations while highlighting the colourful and innovative material science for which Covestro is renowned.

The STEM Education journey started 2 years ago and this year Covestro celebrated #STEM4GirlsFestival2018 with much aplomb and wider outreach which involved travelling across Mumbai, Calicut, Dharampur, Panjim, Nagpur and Greater Noida inspiring the entire nation from all around to join the festival.
Last year, Covestro India had successfully reached out to 1327 girls aged 11-15 from schools across Mumbai who got an opportunity to an interactive and fun experience around Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

With its commitment towards promoting science education in India, Covestro last year had launched mini science centres aimed at enhancing awareness among teachers and students about the value of learning, with a special focus on science and mathematics.
